PHILADELPHIA -- Outfielder Geoff Jenkins has decided to come to the Phillies, accepting a two-year, $13 million contract with a vesting option third season that could bring the deal to $20 million.
ESPN.com reported that the option vests if Jenkins makes 925 combined plate appearances over the 2008 and 2009 seasons or 525 plate appearances in 2009. He would then earn $7.5 million in 2010. If that option doesn't trigger, the sides have a mutual option for the third year. The Phillies also agreed to a six-team, limited no-trade provision.
The deal is pending a physical. Jenkins is in Philadelphia completing that process.
Jenkins, 33, became a free agent when the Brewers declined his 2008 option of $9 million after the season. He batted .255 with 21 homers last season.
The lefty-swinging outfielder has been on Philadelphia's radar for most of the offseason, and the pursuit intensified once Aaron Rowand officially joined the Giants. The Padres dropped out of the bidding earlier this week, leaving only the Phillies.
Jenkins is expected to split time with Jayson Werth in right field, and could also start against right-handers. The move guarantees that Shane Victorino will start in center field.
In other news, the Phillies signed Chad Durbin. The right-hander went 8-7 with a 4.72 ERA in 19 games for Detroit last season.
The Phillies have scheduled a 3:30 p.m. ET press conference to officially announce the signings.
I think geoff is nice woot woot.
